Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological condition that affects many aspects of movement, sensation, energy levels and overall daily functioning. At Brain Hub, a multidisciplinary and personalised approach is used to support people living with MS. We incorporate innovative therapies such as biofeedback, photobiomodulation, and vagal nerve stimulation, in conjunction with other exercise-based and hands-on physiotherapy to support symptoms and improve function.

Below is an overview of three such therapies and their role in MS care:

Biofeedback: Gaining Control Over Symptoms

Biofeedback helps individuals to gain greater awareness and control over physiological functions by providing real-time feedback on body movements. In the context of MS, biofeedback may:

  • Improve Balance: by providing visual feedback to movements, which can support better mobility and independence.
  • Improving Coordination: improving neurological control and coordination of the lower limbs and upper limbs, to support neurological function with tasks of standing, walking, reaching.

Photobiomodulation: Supporting Brain Health and Reducing Inflammation

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy uses specific wavelengths of red light to stimulate cellular energy production and reduce inflammation. It is painless, and often well tolerated by most patients. In MS care, PBM has potential to:

  • Regulate immune response by decreasing inflammation and supporting anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
  • Protect nerve cells through reduced oxidative stress and enhanced mitochondrial function.
  • Reduce Pain: PMB has been shown to support blood flow and reduce localised pain, common with MS.
  • Autonomic Nervous System Stimulation: PBM can be used to stimulate the vagus nerve, a key nerve in the ANS, to help promote balance between ‘fight or flight’ and ‘rest and digest’ centres of the ANS.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation: Calming Inflammation and Supporting the Autonomic Nervous System

Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) modulates the body’s inflammatory response and nervous system function. For patients with MS, VNS may:

  • Reduce inflammation—support calming of inflammation of the nervous system through stimulation of the vagus nerve (either through vibration therapy or gentle electrical stimulation)
  • Regulate mood and stress, addressing common emotional challenges such as depression and anxiety.
  • Improving Autonomic Nervous System Function: stimulation of the vagus nerve can support the body’s natural ability to regulate ‘rest and digest’ states, improving sleep, relaxation, digestion and mood regulation.

VNS can be administered using non-invasive devices both in the clinic and taught for home use.

Overall, these therapies—biofeedback, photobiomodulation, and vagal nerve stimulation—represent innovative strategies that may complement conventional MS treatments.
